Los Angeles Unified students grade district's new menu choices

It's a reform effort years in the making in the nation's second-largest school system. Only this one is being carried out around a group of tables at the district's massive kitchen, where the executive chef is serving his latest creations to several dozen teenagers.

On a recent day, student food critics from East Los Angeles sit in judgment, circling thumbs-up or thumbs-down and writing comments on the new menu choices.

High School Student Founder of 'The Seedling Project'

Sophia Salmore, a high school junior at Marlbourough School in Los Angeles, is the founder of "The Seedling Project"—a farm-to-school based program that cultivates citizenship while promoting environmental stewardship.

In its third year of service, "The Seedling Project" educates the community on ecology while constructing and managing the schools Sustainable Garden.

In addition, The Project supports the school's organic cafeteria. Furthermore, the curricular correlation allows the community and students to explore within the realms of food politics and sustainability.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is in partnership with The Project.

"They view the project as a virtual online "garden" of ideas: a place for planting, gathering and sharing information about school food and garden programs from students and teachers across the country," said Salmore.

Long Beach State Picked to Win 2011 Big West Women’s Volleyball Championship

Long Beach State was picked to win the 2011 Big West Women’s Volleyball championship, in a poll of the league’s coaches released today. The 49ers received seven of nine total first-place votes.

Led by two-time AVCA Honorable Mention outside hitter Caitlin Ledoux and first-team All-Big West selection Haleigh Hampton, the 49ers return five starters from last season’s team that reached the NCAA Tournament for a 24th consecutive season.

USA Junior National Team Takes Fourth Place at 2011 Junior World Championship

Long Beach State sophomore middle blocker Haleigh Hampton helped the USA Junior National Team to a fourth place finish at the 2011 Junior World Championships held in Lima, Peru. Long Beach State advanced out of pool play to the third-place match, but eventually lost to China.

Team USA ultimately finished in fourth-place out of 16 teams, behind Italy, Brazil, and China.
